Count candidate outs, then ask whether they are clean
An out is an unseen card that can improve your hand. A clean out improves you to a hand that is likely to win; a dirty out improves you but may still leave you behind.
- A four-flush usually starts as 9 candidate outs.
- An open-ended straight draw usually starts as 8 candidate outs.
- A gutshot straight draw usually starts as 4 candidate outs.
- Shared-board cards, paired boards and stronger opponent ranges can make some outs dirty.
Candidate outs are not guaranteed winning outs
If a card completes your straight but also completes a higher flush, it should not be treated like a clean full-value out.

The 2/4 rule is a table shortcut, not a solver
After the flop, players often multiply outs by 4 to estimate hitting by the river. After the turn, they multiply outs by 2 for the next card.

The exact by-river probabilities use 47 unseen cards after the flop and account for missing on both remaining cards. On the turn, 9 candidate flush outs from 46 unseen cards equal 19.57% for the river; the ×2 shortcut gives 18.00%.
Current price
Required equity converts the call price into a percentage
If the pot is $1,000 before your call and you must call $250, required equity is 250 / (1000 + 250) = 20.00%.
This is a simplified all-current-money price check. It does not include future betting, fold equity, rake, position, blockers or whether your outs are clean.
Do not mix numbers
Draw equity, range equity and all-in equity answer different questions
A draw shortcut estimates whether a card arrives. Range equity estimates showdown share against possible opponent hands. All-in equity can include ties and multiple opponents.

Example
A simple call can clear the price and still need caution
Suppose A♠ K♠ sees Q♠ J♠ 2♦. The flush draw has 9 candidate outs. If the pot is $1,000 and the call is $250, the price asks for 20.00% required equity.
The flush draw's exact by-river completion probability after the flop is 34.97%, which clears the simplified price. That still does not say the call is always correct: a paired turn, stronger range, reverse implied odds or rake can change the decision.

The trainer reveals a model threshold, not a poker action
A cleared threshold means the selected equity estimate is above required equity in the displayed model. Position, stack depth, future betting, rake and range error remain outside that answer.

Poker outs and pot odds FAQ
Should I count outs or calculate pot odds first?
Count candidate outs first so you know what can improve. Then calculate pot odds to see the current price you must beat.
- Discount dirty outs before trusting the count.
- Use required equity to compare the price with equity.
Is the 2/4 rule accurate?
It is a quick estimate. It is close enough for table practice, but exact probabilities, blockers, dirty outs, ranges and future betting can move the real answer.
- After the flop, outs x 4 estimates by-river equity.
- After the turn, outs x 2 estimates next-card equity.
Why is required equity call divided by pot plus call?
Your call becomes part of the pot you can win, so the denominator includes both the current pot and your call amount.
- Use the pot before your call.
- Do not include future bets that are not already committed.
If my draw clears pot odds, should I always call?
No. Clearing the simplified price is only the first check. Position, rake, range accuracy, implied odds, reverse implied odds and future betting can all change the real decision.
- All-in spots are cleaner than non-all-in spots.
- Dirty outs can make the raw number too optimistic.
