First calculation
Separate the entertainment budget, one session and the base unit
One balance cannot answer all three questions. The total budget limits gambling spend over a chosen period; the session amount limits one sitting; the base unit sets the default chip amount.

| Layer | Question it answers | Set when | Must exclude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entertainment budget | What can be lost without affecting essentials? | During a planned budget review | Bills, debt payments, savings goals and borrowed money |
| Session bankroll | What is the maximum available for this sitting? | Before opening the table | Automatic top-ups after a loss |
| Base unit | What is the default amount for one betting unit? | Before the first spin | Loss-chasing increases |
A redeposit is a new decision, not a reset
If the session amount is gone, adding money rewrites the limit after seeing the result. End the session and review the budget later.
Worked arithmetic
What do unit calculations look like in USD and HKD?
The percentages below demonstrate calculation only. They are not recommended stakes and do not make the session safe. The real table minimum may invalidate the unit.

| Session bankroll | 1% arithmetic | 2% arithmetic | Example table minimum | Fit check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USD 100 | USD 1 | USD 2 | USD 5 | The minimum is 5% of the session amount. |
| USD 500 | USD 5 | USD 10 | USD 10 | The minimum equals the 2% example. |
| HKD 1,000 | HKD 10 | HKD 20 | HKD 50 | The minimum is 5% of the session amount. |
| HKD 5,000 | HKD 50 | HKD 100 | HKD 100 | The minimum equals the 2% example. |
Do not raise the unit just to enter the table
If the displayed minimum is larger than the planned unit, the table does not fit the calculation. A different table—or no session—is the consistent choice.
Pass-or-fail check
The minimum affects the first chip; the maximum affects the full progression
Read both limits. A minimum can concentrate too much of the session amount in each spin. A maximum can stop a progression before its claimed recovery step.
- Divide the table minimum by the session bankroll.
- Add every simultaneous chip when checking the minimum for inside bets or call bets.
- Calculate the largest planned stake before checking the table maximum.
- Do not assume a live table and computer version use the same limits.
The number most players miss
Planned spins and total wager are not the same as the opening balance
A balance can be reused after winning spins, so the amount passing through the table may exceed the money visible at the start. For flat stakes, planned total wager is simply stake per spin multiplied by planned spins.

| Stake per spin | Planned spins | Planned total wager | Opening session amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD 2 | 30 | USD 60 | Could be USD 100 |
| USD 5 | 50 | USD 250 | Could be USD 200 |
| HKD 20 | 40 | HKD 800 | Could be HKD 1,000 |
Expected loss applies to total wager
On standard European roulette, a rough theoretical expectation is 2.70% of the amount wagered on standard bets. One session can finish far above or below that figure because actual results vary.
Same edge, different ride
Straight-up and even-money bets can have the same edge but very different swings
A straight-up number wins rarely and pays 35:1. Red/black wins more often and pays 1:1. On a standard European wheel both carry the same 2.70% house edge, but their short-session result patterns look very different.

| Bet | Coverage | Payout | Short-session pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 of 37 | 35:1 | Many losses interrupted by an occasional large return. |
| Dozen | 12 of 37 | 2:1 | Mid-range hit rate and payout. |
| Red/black | 18 of 37 | 1:1 | More frequent wins, but losing runs remain possible. |
Stress-test the ladder
Martingale stake levels can outrun both the session and the table
A one-unit Martingale sequence requires 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 units over six consecutive stakes. That is 63 units committed before the next step, and the seventh stake would require 64 units.

| Base unit | Sixth stake | Total through six stakes | Seventh stake required |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD 2 | USD 64 | USD 126 | USD 128 |
| USD 5 | USD 160 | USD 315 | USD 320 |
| HKD 20 | HKD 640 | HKD 1,260 | HKD 1,280 |
The ladder is exposure, not a recovery promise
A losing sequence can continue. The next spin remains independent, and neither the bankroll nor the table maximum is unlimited.
Write them in advance
Use money, time, redeposit and behaviour stop conditions
A usable plan tells the player when the session ends without consulting the latest result. A win target can cap a session; it is not a profit method.
- Money: stop when the written session loss amount is reached.
- Time: stop at the set clock time, including after a recent win.
- Redeposit: do not add funds during the same session.
- Behaviour: stop if the base unit rises to chase a loss or essential money enters the decision.
Copyable session record
Record the plan and the actual session on separate lines
The result alone does not show whether the plan was followed. Copy these fields before practice, then fill the closing column when the session ends.

| Field | Planned | Actual |
|---|---|---|
| Date and table rules | Wheel type, zero rule, minimum and maximum | |
| Session bankroll | Currency amount | |
| Base unit and bet types | Unit plus permitted placements | |
| Time window | Start and end time | |
| Money stop | Maximum session loss | |
| Total wager | Stake × planned spins or sequence total | |
| Closing result | Not predicted | Balance, net result and limits followed |
Roulette bankroll questions
How large should a roulette bankroll be?
There is no universal amount. It must be disposable entertainment money, fit the table minimum and remain separate from bills, savings, debt payments and borrowed funds.
- Start from affordability.
- Define one session amount.
- Check the table before playing.
What percentage of a roulette bankroll should one bet be?
Figures such as 1% or 2% can illustrate arithmetic, but they are not universal recommendations or guarantees. The table minimum and the number of simultaneous chips can make the example impractical.
- Calculate from the session amount.
- Count every chip.
- Do not increase after a loss.
Why can total roulette wager be larger than the bankroll?
Winning stakes and returns can be used on later spins, so the same money may pass through the table more than once. Total wager adds every stake; bankroll is the money available.
- Track every spin.
- Do not confuse total wager with loss.
- Expected value uses the amount wagered.
Does a stop-loss or win target improve roulette odds?
No. It can limit the amount or duration of a session, but it does not change the probability or expected value of the next spin.
- Set it before play.
- Do not move it after a result.
- Use a time limit as well.
Can I test a roulette session plan without real money?
Yes. Enter a fictional session amount, use virtual chips and record total wager, net result and whether the written limits were followed. Practice results do not predict future play.
- No deposit is required.
- Use the same base unit.
- Stop at the planned point.
