Baccarat Third-Card Rules: When Banker and Player Draw

Step one

Baccarat totals use only the last digit

Suits do not affect the total. Ace is worth 1, cards 2–9 keep their face value, and 10, Jack, Queen and King are worth 0.

Add the two or three cards and keep only the final digit. Seven plus eight totals 15, so the baccarat total is 5.

Check naturals first

An opening total of 8 or 9 is a natural

Naturals come first in the procedure. If either side has 8 or 9 with its initial two cards, standard baccarat normally stops drawing and compares the totals.

Player has a natural 9, so no more cards are drawn and Player wins.

Banker usually draws on 3, but stands when Player’s third card is 8.

Core drawing rules are usually fixed, but payouts and feature tables vary

Standard Punto Banco uses automatic third-card rules. No-commission baccarat, Super 6, Dragon 7 and other variants may change Banker payouts or add side bets.

No commission does not automatically mean better value

Many no-commission tables reduce the payout for a particular Banker win. Compare the actual paytable instead of judging the label alone.

Baccarat third-card questions

Does Player always draw on 5 in baccarat?

Yes under standard Punto Banco rules, unless a natural 8 or 9 has already stopped the drawing procedure. Player draws on an initial total of 0–5 and stands on 6–7.

When does Banker stand on 3?

If Player drew a third card with value 8, Banker stands on 3. Against every other Player third-card value, Banker draws on 3.

Normally no. In standard baccarat, an opening 8 or 9 on either side stops the regular third-card procedure and the two totals are compared.

Can a player choose whether Banker or Player draws?

No. Punto Banco uses fixed rules to draw cards automatically. The bettor chooses a wager, not whether either hand takes a third card.

What does Banker do when Player stands?
